PERTH, Australia: Australia asserted its dominance in the opening Test against Pakistan at Perth Stadium, building a commanding 402-run lead on the fourth day. Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Marsh showcased resilience and aggression, guiding Australia to a strong position with an unbeaten partnership.
Starting the day at 84-2, Australia faced early challenges from Pakistan’s pace bowlers on a deteriorating pitch displaying visible cracks. Debutant Khurram Shahzad made a breakthrough, dismissing Steve Smith lbw for 45, leaving Australia at 108-3. Despite Smith’s unsuccessful review, the pressure intensified as Travis Head departed for 14 in an eventful over by Aamer Jamal.
However, Mitchell Marsh turned the momentum in Australia’s favor, displaying an aggressive approach. He hit sixes off Jamal and spinner Agha Salman, adding crucial runs to the scoreboard. A significant escape on 23, where skipper Shan Masood dropped a straightforward catch at mid-off, allowed Marsh to continue his innings.
Usman Khawaja, on the other hand, played a resilient knock, reaching his 25th Test half-century off 151 balls. As he accelerated the scoring, Australia built a substantial lead over Pakistan. The partnership between Khawaja and Marsh reached 79, contributing to Australia’s total of 186-4 by lunch.
With a lead of 402 runs, Australia appeared poised for a declaration later in the day, aiming to consolidate its position and secure another Test victory against Pakistan at Perth Stadium.
