ISLAMABAD: Australia lifted the Women’s T20 World Cup trophy for the 6th time when they defeated South Africa by nineteen runs in the final at Newlands on Sunday.

Opening batter Beth Mooney led the Australian innings, smashing a not out 74 in a total of 156 for six.

South Africa never reached the required run rate and were restricted to 137 for 6 despite opener Laura Wolvaardt hitting 61 off 48 deliveries.

Semi-final heroine batter Tazmin Brits struggled to move forward and scored only 17 runs and was sent packing by Darcie Brown.

Marizanne Kapp hit 2 boundaries but was back to pavilion for 11 and South African captain Sune Luus was run out for 2. At that stage, the home side required another 103 runs off 56 deliveries.

Home side’s hopes for trophy

Wolvaardt and the aggressive Chloe Tryon gave a crowd of about 15,000 hopes with an attacking 4th wicket partnership of 55 off 37 deliveries but the clash was effectively over when Wolvaardt was sent packing by Megan Schutt in the seventeenth over.

The left-handed batter Mooney played a measured innings, posting 74 runs off 53 deliveries.
