Austrian Envoy, Delegation Take Interest in WAPDA Projects

ISLAMABAD: Andrea Wicke, Austrian Ambassador to Pakistan, and a delegation comprising members of Austrian firms called on Chairman WAPDA Engineer Lt Gen (R) Sajjad Ghani on Thursday.

Welcoming the Austrian envoy and the delegation, Chairman Ghani briefed them about WAPDA’s mandate, its development record, financial position, and expertise to implement big projects successfully in the water and hydropower sectors.

He apprised the visiting delegation that WAPDA is constructing 8 big multi-purpose projects, including Mohmand Dam, Dasu Hydropower Project, Diamer Basha Dam, Tarbela 5th Extension, etc.

WAPDA’s mega projects

Scheduled for completion from 2024 to 2029, these mega projects will add 9.7-million-acre feet to the gross water storage and about 10,000 megawatts of clean, green, and low-cost hydel electricity to the National Grid.

The delegation was also informed about Pattan, Thakot, and other ready-for-construction initiatives. WAPDA’s under-construction and ready-for-construction projects have immense business opportunities, the Chairman said.

He added that Austrian companies may benefit from these opportunities by participating in international competitive bidding.

Later, Member Finance provided details of the innovative financial plans for the construction of projects by WAPDA.

Commending the contribution of WAPDA to developing a no-carbon energy and sustainable and economy in Pakistan, the Austrian envoy said that she is pleased to know details of WAPDA’s development record.
