BAKU: Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally announced the country’s intention to reopen its embassy in Afghanistan in 2024. This strategic decision highlights Azerbaijan’s commitment to fostering stronger diplomatic relations with Afghanistan and signifies a pivotal step toward enhanced bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

The news, covered by Azerbaijani media outlet Report on Friday, underscores the significance of this diplomatic move. The official statement affirms the country’s dedication to reopening the embassy, which is anticipated to contribute to closer ties and collaboration between Azerbaijan and Afghanistan.

President Ilham Aliyev appointed Elham Nariman Oglu Mammadov as the ambassador to Afghanistan on July 28, 2021, according to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry.

Azerbaijan’s Embassy Opening in Kabul

The initial decision to open the Azerbaijani embassy was put on hold following the rise of the Taliban administration to power, highlighting the delicate nature of diplomatic engagements in the region.

Notably, the Taliban has expressed support for Azerbaijan’s position amid the ongoing tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh earlier this year. This support forms part of the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region, impacting bilateral and regional relations.

As of now, the Taliban regime has not commented on the reopening of the Azerbaijani embassy in Afghanistan.

The activation of Azerbaijan’s embassy in Afghanistan will be a significant development with the potential to impact regional diplomacy and the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
