Azerbaijan to Invest $2bn in Pakistan: Minister

Pakistan's minister for investment says Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will be visiting Azerbaijan later this month.

BAKU, Azerbaijan: Pakistan’s Minister for Board of Investment, Privatisation, and Communications has said Azerbaijan is set to sign worth $2 billion investment agreements with Pakistan in various sectors during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Baku later this month.

Abdul Aleem Khan, who is currently in Baku leading a Pakistan delegation, said that the Prime Minister would visit Central Asian countries this month.

According to a press release issued by the ministry for privatisation Khan, met with the Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, Ali Asadov, in Baku to discuss avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation.

“During the meeting, Minister Abdul Aleem Khan conveyed best wishes on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan and highlighted the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to Central Asian countries later this month,” it said.

The discussions focused on enhancing economic cooperation, with Minister Abdul Aleem Khan stressing the vast investment opportunities in Pakistan, especially in the privatisation of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).

He also invited Azerbaijan to invest in Pakistan’s motorway infrastructure and other key sectors, assuring all possible facilitation.

Prime Minister Ali Asadov reaffirmed the deep-rooted ties between Azerbaijan and Pakistan, built on a strong bond of brotherhood. He lauded Pakistan’s recent economic advancements and assured Azerbaijan’s support in increasing bilateral trade and investment.

The leaders acknowledged that after the state visit of Azerbaijan’s President to Pakistan last year, bilateral ties have entered a new era of strategic cooperation.

Aleem Khan also held high-level meetings with Azerbaijan’s Minister for Energy Parviz Shahbazov, Minister for Transport Rashad Nabiyev, Deputy Minister of Economy Samad Bashirli, and the President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Rovshan Najaf.

These discussions focused on mutual trade, investment in energy projects, and infrastructure development.

Azerbaijani officials expressed keen interest in Pakistan’s privatisation programme, particularly in government-run enterprises.

A press release issued by Khan’s office stated that the pace of work on various memorandums of understanding between the two countries was also reviewed during the talks with Azerbaijan ministers, and special discussions were further held on trade corridors, rail networks and other means of communication from Pakistan to Central Asian states.

Pakistan and Azerbaijan have maintained close diplomatic and economic relations, with both countries seeking to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors.
