Bangladesh Trains Collision Kills 17, Injuring Scores

DHAKA: At least 17 people were killed and scores other wounded after two trains collided in eastern Bangladesh on Monday, Western media reported.

As per reports a freight train smashed into a passenger train in Bhairab, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) away from Dhaka.

Anowar Hossain, superintendent of Dhaka Railway Police said that seventeen bodies have been recovered and many wounded were shifted to hospital.

He feared that the death toll could climb as rescue operations were ongoing.

He said the freight train smashed into the passenger train from behind. Hossain said according to initial reports the freight train broke the signal, leading to the accident.

Authorities have started a formal investigation to the incident.

Mohammad Masud, local fire service chief, told media that many people got trapped inside the coaches after the collision.

Train accidents are quite common in Bangladesh, due to unsupervised rail crossings, poor signaling and track conditions.
