BEIJING: China has asked the US to end alleged “harassment” of Chinese students entering the United States, Chinese official media reported on Monday. According to state-run news agency Xinhua, China’s public security minister has made this demand during a meeting with the US homeland security secretary in Vienna.
In a readout of talks Sunday between Alejandro Mayorkas and Wang Xiaohong, China urged US “to stop harassing and checking Chinese students for no ostensible reason,” state-run news agency Xinhua reported.
China has repeatedly alleged that Chinese citizens with valid travel documents have been subject to aggressive questionings and deportations at US airports, with its embassy in Washington last month asking Chinese visitors to avoid the capital’s Dulles airport.

In his meeting with Mayorkas, Wang asked the United States to “ensure that Chinese nationals enjoy fair entry treatment and dignity,” Xinhua maintained.
Wang Xiaohong also pressed Mayorkas to “rectify” Washington’s decision to place China on a list of major nations transiting narcotics. US and Chinese officials also agreed to cooperate to control the production of ingredients to make fentanyl during a meeting last month in Beijing.
A US readout of Sunday’s talks stated the two sides had held constructive dialogue on the steps needed to curb the spread of precursor chemicals. It added that the two sides also commitments to cooperate at various level including technical bilateral exchanges between experts.
The two sides also discussed increasing cooperation “in the fight to protect kids from online child exploitation,” the readout further maintained.
