BEIJING: China’s foreign minister Wang Yi has called Israel’s war in Gaza a shame for civilization and reiterated his country’s calls for an immediate truce. Wang Yi told media persons at a news conference that it was a tragedy for humankind and a disgrace for civilization that in the 21st century, this humanitarian catastrophe cannot be prevented. China has been calling for an immediate truce since the start of the current Hamas-Israel war in October 2023.

Beijing has historically been supportive of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. Earlier, China’s President Xi Jinping has called for a global peace conference to end the war in Gaza.

Wang Yi stated that no reason can justify the continuation of the war in Gaza and even no excuse can justify being desperately killed.

He said that the world must act immediately, making an urgent ceasefire and the cessation of hostilities a top priority, and ensuring humanitarian relief an immediate moral responsibility. Chian’s top diplomat said Beijing supports complete UN membership for a Palestinian state. Wang Yi maintained that they supported Palestine becoming a formal member of the UN.

He added that the disaster in the Gaza Strip once again reminded the entire world that the fact that the Palestinian territories have been occupied for a long time can no longer be neglected.

Beijing’s top envoy said that the long-cherished demand of the Palestinian people to set up an independent nation can no longer be evaded, and the historical injustice suffered by Palestinians cannot continue for generations without being taken steps to correct.
