BEIJING: The Grand Canal Museum is scheduled to open its doors in Beijing by the end of this year, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Grand Canal, featuring around 6,000 exhibits related to Beijing and the ancient canal.

According to Feng Hao, the Capital Museum, situated in the Beijing Municipal Administrative Center, also known as the Capital Museum East Branch, is responsible for museum collections. The museum spans an expansive 99,700 square meters.

Designed to accommodate up to 6,000 visitors daily, the new museum aims to seamlessly integrate vessels, sailing, and water elements, providing a comprehensive display of the Grand Canal’s cultural significance.

The exhibition space encompasses sections for basic, themed, open, and temporary exhibitions. In the open exhibition section, visitors can engage in an interactive experience that employs digital technology to explore the themes of Beijing and the Grand Canal, as highlighted by Feng.

With a history exceeding 2,500 years, the Grand Canal historically linked Beijing and Hangzhou in east China’s Zhejiang Province, serving as a vital transportation artery in ancient China.

This museum is anticipated to offer a captivating journey through time, showcasing the cultural richness associated with this historic waterway. —Xinhua/APP
