Beijing to Support Togo in Safeguarding Its Sovereignty: Wang Yi

BEIJING: China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has said that Beijing will continue to firmly support Togo in safeguarding its sovereignty, development interests and security. He expressed these remarks during a visit to the African nation.  According to a statement issued by Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi visited several African nations over the past few days.

Earlier, China’s Foreign Ministry said that China’s top diplomat has chosen Africa as the first foreign trip destination for the new year, and this time the trip will also cover Togo. The statement added that Wang Yi’s first overseas trip in 2024 has started from January 13.

Following his visit to Africa, the Foreign Minister will also visit Brazil and Jamaica from January 18 to 22, the Chinses Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Meanwhile, China said it had summoned the Philippine ambassador after over Taiwan election remarks.  China’s foreign ministry said that China is strongly dissatisfied and resolutely opposes President Ferdinand Marcos’s remarks about Taiwanese president-elect Lai Ching-te.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s statement comes as Ferdinand Marcos Jr. congratulated the winner of Taiwan’s presidential polls, Lai Ching-te. In a statement via social media, the President of Philippines stated that he was looking forward to close cooperation and strengthening mutual interests.
