NEW YORK: Beijing called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take “urgent actions” to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East as Israel launched fresh attacks in Lebanon.

China’s permanent representative to the United Nations Fu Cong, stated during a Security Council briefing on Wednesday, that it needed to make clear demands to halt the cycle of violence over the Israeli-Lebanon war.

“The UNSC bears the primary responsibility for the maintenance of global peace and security,” the official Xinhua news agency cited Fu as saying, noting that all sides concerned “must return to the track of political as well as diplomatic solutions”.
