MINSK, Belarus: Belarus has introduced the “35th Anniversary of the Withdrawal of Soviet Troops from Afghanistan” medal to commemorate the historic event. President Aleksandr Lukashenko signed decree No. 403, formalizing the institution of the medal and recognizing the contributions of individuals who served during the specified period.
The obverse side of the medal showcases a five-pointed star in the upper center, symbolizing honor and valor. The map of Afghanistan, with Kabul as its capital, is prominently displayed, surrounded by gold-colored relief inscriptions “1979” and “1989.” The lower part features mountains and two helicopters above a column of armored personnel carriers, with servicemen holding the Battle Banner.
This medal is dedicated to individuals who performed military and service duty in Afghanistan from December 1979 to February 1989. It will be awarded to citizens of Belarus, including posthumously, who served during this critical period. Additionally, members of the Armed Forces, other troops, military formations, government agencies, and organizations, as well as those who contributed significantly to patriotic education, the remembrance of fallen heroes, and the development of the veteran movement, are eligible for this honor.
The institution of this medal reflects Belarus’s commitment to preserving the historical legacy of those who served in Afghanistan and underscores the importance of recognizing their sacrifices. It aims to promote patriotic values, support social and medical rehabilitation efforts, and honor the memory of peacekeeping soldiers and their families.
