ISLAMABAD: Australian wicket-keeper batter Beth Mooney has made history as the first Australian women cricketer to score a century in all three formats by accomplishing a remarkable feat during the third day of the Ashes Test at the MCG on Saturday.

Mooney reached this significant milestone with the very last ball of the opening over on day three in Melbourne. After finishing the previous day on 98, she had to wait as Tahlia McGrath faced four deliveries in the final over of day two. Her century came off 155 balls, marking only the second century ever recorded in a women’s Test at the iconic venue, following Annabel Sutherland’s impressive 163 in the first two days of the match.

Exclusive club

Once she celebrated her century, Mooney managed to add just six more runs to her score before being bowled by Lauren Filer, concluding her innings at 106 off 173 balls. She became the ninth wicket to fall in Australia’s innings, which ultimately ended at 440, giving the hosts a commanding first-innings lead of 270 runs.

The innings mean Mooney is now part of an exclusive club. She is the fourth woman to score at least one century in all three formats of the game during their career, and the first from Australia. She has scored two T20I centuries so far, one in 2017 against England and one in 2019 against Sri Lanka, as well as three ODI hundreds.

Other club members

Heather Knight is the only woman who has scored more than one Test century on the list, both coming against Australia. Tammy Beaumont is the second England name on the list, while Laura Wolvaardt became the first South African player to score centuries in all three formats when she scored 122 against India in a Test match last year.
