WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden confirmed the safe release of a four-year-old American girl who was held captive in Gaza, expressing relief and emphasizing the need for an extension of the pause in Israel-Hamas fighting to facilitate the release of more hostages.

The announcement followed the Israeli army’s statement that Hamas had freed 17 hostages, including the young American girl.

In a hastily arranged media appearance, President Biden shared the news, stating, “She is free, and she is in Israel now.” He underscored the ongoing efforts to secure the release of additional Americans still presumed held by Hamas, including seven men, two women, and Abigail, the four-year-old girl.

Biden Highlights Success of Diplomacy for Gaza Truce

Biden highlighted the success of “intensive US diplomacy” in collaboration with Israel, Qatar, Egypt, and other partners, resulting in the release of 58 hostages during the current temporary truce. The president expressed optimism about extending the pause in hostilities, emphasizing the goal of bringing all hostages back to their loved ones.

“The three-day-old truce is delivering life-saving results,” Biden said. “Critically needed aid is going in, and hostages are coming out.” He reiterated the commitment to continue working until every hostage is safely returned, emphasizing the humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza.
