WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden convened a two-day summit with leaders from the Pacific Islands Forum on Monday, reaffirming his commitment to countering China’s growing influence in the region while addressing the urgent issue of climate change. The summit marks a pivotal moment in diplomatic efforts to strengthen ties with Pacific nations and bolster their resilience against environmental challenges.

President Biden, addressing the 18-member Pacific Islands Forum, acknowledged the grave consequences of climate change faced by these nations and assured them of the United States’ unwavering support. The Pacific islands have been vocal in their criticism of wealthy nations for insufficiently addressing climate change, which disproportionately affects their vulnerable territories.

At the outset of the summit, President Biden announced a significant financial commitment, requesting Congress to approve $200 million in new assistance for the Pacific islands. This funding will be channeled towards helping the islands prepare for climate-related challenges and natural hazards, as well as enhancing infrastructure resilience.

Biden Assures Pacific Islands Leaders of Support

In his address to the Pacific leaders, President Biden stated, “I want you to know I hear you, the people in the United States and around the world hear you. We hear your warnings of a rising sea and the existential threat they pose to your nations. We hear your calls for reassurance that you never, never, never will lose your statehood or membership in the UN as a result of a climate crisis. Today, the United States is making it clear that this is our position as well.”

This summit is part of the Biden administration’s broader efforts to strengthen ties with Pacific nations and counter China’s influence in the region. China’s growing presence in the Pacific has raised concerns among Western powers, prompting the United States to engage in diplomatic initiatives aimed at offering an alternative partnership to these island nations.

The Pacific Islands Forum leaders welcomed the financial commitment and expressed their gratitude for the renewed focus on climate change and regional security. The summit discussions are expected to encompass a range of topics, including economic cooperation, maritime security, and regional stability.
