WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden has invited all Democratic governors for a meeting on Wednesday, as he attempts to gather support among his party’s top leaders after a shaky debate last week.

The discussion will be virtual, two people familiar with Biden’s strategy told US media on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the matter that hasn’t yet been made public.

The president condemned the Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity on Monday night but announced a largely politics-free and business-as-usual debate schedule.

The meeting is the strongest indication yet that Biden is trying to calm down fears among some Democrats, who worry he may not be a suitable candidate for the Presidential slot. Earlier Biden had a raspy and halting performance during last week’s debate in Atlanta with his opponent Donald Trump.

Texas Democratic Representative Lloyd Doggett on Tuesday advised Biden to formally withdraw from the race. But most of the party’s top leaders in Congress and elsewhere have continued to support him, at least for now.

His campaign has downplayed the president’s political issues in a series of memos and private meetings with strategists, donors and party insiders, insisting that Biden can overcome all issues political.
