WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden’s domestic policy adviser, Susan Rice, is tendering resignation from her post next month, several current and former high administration officials said.

The resignation brings to a close Rice’s prolific, wide-ranging, and at times controversial term overseeing Biden’s domestic agenda — including some of the difficult political issues, such as immigration policy, NBC News reported on Monday.

During her over 2 years in the role, Biden has approved executive and legislative actions on gun safety, student loans, health care, policing, and other important priorities for Democrats. According to a key official, Rice’s last day in the administration will be 26 May.

Jeff Zients, White House chief of staff, said Rice has been critical to pushing Biden’s agenda and has taken the Domestic Policy Council to new heights. According to a senior official, the process for President Biden to select her successor will include candidates inside and outside the White House.

Adviser started job without experience

Rice, on President Biden’s shortlist for vice president, started the job without a domestic policy background, having served in foreign policy positions during the Obama and Clinton administrations.

Among her first decisions in the Biden administration was to introduce a structure at the Domestic Policy Council (DPC) similar to that of the National Security Council (NSC), bringing in policy experts and systemizing a process for convening officials across the administration.
