DOHA, Qatar: During a press conference in Doha, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that Israel has agreed to withdraw some of its military units from the Gaza Strip.
Blinken emphasized that the United States does not support any long-term occupation of Gaza by Israel, stating that the withdrawal agreement includes specific timelines and locations, which Israel has agreed to follow.
Blinken also confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved the terms of the agreement the day before. His visit to Qatar is part of a broader effort by the U.S. to push forward talks aimed at ending the 10-month-old Gaza conflict.
While the U.S. has been criticized for its continued support of Israel, Blinken’s visit is positioned as an effort to establish a ceasefire in Gaza. The latest U.S. proposal was introduced after discussions in Doha, with Hamas urging mediators to implement President Biden’s framework from May rather than engage in further negotiations.
