BANDA ACEH: Indonesian authorities have initiated a search and rescue operation for seven individuals, including four Australian tourists, who went missing after their boat encountered adverse weather conditions off Sumatra island. The boat was en route from Nias island to the private island of Pinang when it faced challenging weather on Sunday.
According to Octavianto, the head of the local search and rescue agency, two speedboats, carrying a total of 17 people, embarked on the journey. While one of the boats, with 10 people on board, managed to find shelter on a nearby island, the second boat, carrying four Australians and three Indonesians, continued its journey despite the worsening conditions.
Rescue Teams Relocating Missing Boat
Upon receiving information from resort management on Pinang, rescue teams immediately launched efforts to locate the missing boat. Despite their dedicated search, the vessel has yet to be located, and rescue operations will continue through the night. Octavianto noted that if the search yields no results, the efforts will resume the following morning at 0700.
The other boat, which was carrying eight Australians and two Indonesians, arrived at Pinang late on Sunday, having successfully navigated the challenging waters.
Assistance in the search includes two rescue vessels and an aircraft, while the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is working closely with Indonesian authorities to facilitate the search and ensure the safety of the missing individuals.
Marine accidents are not uncommon in Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago of around 17,000 islands where reliance on ferries and small boats for transportation often encounters safety challenges. Despite such hazards, people continue to use these modes of travel due to limited alternatives.
In a statement, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade expressed its concern and commitment to supporting the ongoing rescue efforts. “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those missing during this distressing time,” a spokesperson stated.
