ABUJA, Nigeria: In a tragic incident, a group of Boko Haram militants attacked farmers in the Mafa local government area of Borno state, northeastern Nigeria, resulting in the death of at least 10 farmers and the abduction of nine others.

The assault took place late on Sunday when members of the extremist organization targeted workers in agricultural fields.

Borno state has remained a hotbed for militancy and has been at the centre of a 14-year-long war against insurgency in Nigeria. Boko Haram, an Islamist extremist group, has consistently targeted farmers in the region, causing loss of lives and widespread fear among the local population.

In addition to Boko Haram, other armed groups, often referred to locally as bandits, have been causing havoc across northwest Nigeria in recent years. These groups have kidnapped thousands of individuals, claimed the lives of hundreds, and made it perilous to travel by road or engage in farming activities in affected areas.

The cumulative toll of this ongoing violence is staggering, with over 40,000 people having lost their lives and more than two million others forcibly displaced since the inception of Boko Haram’s rebellion in 2009. This insurgency has not only affected Nigeria but has also spilt over into neighbouring countries such as Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.
