BRASILIA: Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will meet Chinese’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday afternoon in the northeastern Brazilian city of Fortaleza, said a statement from a presidential spokesperson on Thursday.

Wang, who is currently on official trip of African nations, Brazil, and Jamaica, is in Brasilia for two days of meetings at the foreign ministry. A joint statement is expected on Friday at midday.

Brazil’s export market heavily relies on China, particularly for soy and iron ore. Recent discussions at a Brazil-China meeting in Shenzhen indicated Chinese companies’ plans to increase investments in Brazil, particularly in power transmission, oil, and electric vehicles.

President Lula, currently traveling in northeast Brazil, is focused on the upcoming municipal elections this year. During the meeting, he is anticipated to reaffirm Brazil’s stance on Taiwan, expressing support for the One China Principle.

In April, a statement from the Foreign Ministry had already emphasized Brazil’s “firm support to the One China Principle,” recognizing China as the sole legitimate government of the entire nation, with Taiwan considered an inseparable part of Chinese territory.
