Brazil’s G20 Invitation to Egypt, Reflection of Strong Bilateral Ties

CAIRO: Brazil, which took over the year-long presidency of the G20 recently, has invited Egypt to participate as a guest at the group’s meetings during 2024, Arab media reported on Sunday.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry welcoming the invitation said that the development reflects the strongly friendly ties between the two countries and embodies Egypt’s regional and global position and influential role regarding the main international economic matters.

Ambassador Ragy El-Etreby, assistant minister of foreign affairs led the Egyptian delegation in Brasilia last week at the conference of the personal representatives of the leaders of G20 nations. The participants at the meeting sought solutions to the structural difficulties the global economy is facing, amid challenges related clean energy and climate change, poverty, inequality and sustainable development.

G20 states face major challenges

El-Etreby said that Egypt’s participation comes at a time when G20 states face major challenges as a result of the severe a crisis that have damaged the world.

He said the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, war in Ukraine and the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza due the ongoing Israeli aggression are the main challenges the world is facing right now.

He added that G20 member countries account for 80 percent of the international gross domestic product, 75 percent of the total volume of international trade, and 60 percent of the world’s population, which means the group is one of the most important frameworks for economic decision-making.

The contributions made by Egypt during the meeting in Brasilia showed its desire to be active and influential member of such gatherings. El-Etreby said that Egypt gave its output on key subjects which are priority issues for Egypt, Africa and developing nations such as energy, debt, food, and financing development and reform of the global economic system.
