LONDON: Members of the BRICS alliance have demanded for greater global uptake in renewable energy as a means to not only tackle climate change but international economic inequalities.

BRICS countries were responsible for 55% of solar capacity added to the international grid in 2023.

While China led the way, adding 40% of new capacity, Brazil, South Africa, and India also found themselves among key producers.

Chinese solar manufacturer Trina Solar’s Chairman Gao Jifan told the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday that the developments made by BRICS countries will benefit the whole world.

He said that the Gulf countries have ambitious plans for renewable energy development, and developing renewables is not just about climate change but also achieving green development, and so also about reducing poverty.

He added that these nations are world leaders, and their contribution in spreading green technology will better stimulate a green transition.

UAE as a BRICS member

Abdulla bin Touq Al-Marri, UAE Economy Minister, said that his country’s decision to become a BRICS member was motivated by the need to engage in a “fragmented” world.

We are not living in a Cold War environment anymore, and so joining BRICS was not about taking a political stance, but rather is part of an economic plan, as a way of engaging trade, traders, and supply and demand, he said.

He added that in the fragmented world in which we are living, BRICS is creating new ways of dealing and to really grow economies moving forward.
