ADELAIDE, Australia: Britain and Australia jointly issued a call on Friday for an “immediate cessation of fighting” in Gaza, amidst mounting diplomatic pressure on Israel to reconsider its planned ground assault on Rafah, a southern city in the region.

In a joint statement following discussions in Adelaide, Australian and UK foreign and defence ministers emphasized the critical need for an immediate halt to hostilities in Gaza. They highlighted the urgency of allowing humanitarian aid to flow into the area and facilitating the release of hostages.

The statement coincided with the anticipated presentation of a resolution to the UN Security Council by the United States, underscoring the necessity of an immediate ceasefire. This move signals a potential shift in Washington’s stance, which has historically shielded Israel from UN criticism.

Concerns have been raised in Washington about the escalating human toll of Israel’s prolonged offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in nearly 32,000 casualties, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-controlled territory. Suspicions linger regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s motives, with some speculating that political considerations are prolonging the conflict.

Despite mounting international pressure, Netanyahu remains steadfast in his commitment to intensifying operations in Gaza. His plans to advance into Rafah aim to neutralize remnants of Hamas forces responsible for previous attacks on Israel.

Britain’s and Australia’s joint plea for an immediate cessation of hostilities underscores growing international apprehension about the devastating impact of Israel’s military campaign, known as Operation Swords of Iron. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is deemed “catastrophic,” necessitating urgent action to alleviate suffering and allow for the delivery of essential aid to Palestinian civilians.

Both nations, as influential members of the UN Security Council, are poised to advocate for a sustainable ceasefire and increased humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza. Additionally, they condemned Russia’s intervention in Ukraine, calling for the withdrawal of Russian forces and urging other nations to refrain from enabling Russia’s aggression.
