LONDON: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is set to announce £200 million of public investment to enhance the UK’s nuclear deterrent programme and its civil nuclear industry, which the government says will create 40,000 new jobs.
Rishi Sunak’s Downing Street office in a press release ahead of his announcement said the government will collaborate with industry leaders including Rolls-Royce and EDF, BAE Systems and Babcock to invest at least £763 million by 2030 in jobs, skills, and education.
The investment aims to ensure that the northern England town of Barrow-in-Furness, where Rishi Sunak will make the announcement, flourishes as the home of UK nuclear submarine-building.
Rishi Sunak said safeguarding the future of our nuclear deterrent and nuclear energy industry is a crucial national endeavour.
He added that in a more contested and dangerous world, the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent is more signific than ever. He said nuclear delivers will be cleaner, cheaper and home-grown energy for consumers.
The PM said that is why the government is investing in Barrow, the home of UK submarines, and in the jobs and skills of the future in the booming British nuclear industry.
