LONDON: The British Government emphasized on Wednesday that it has no intentions of double-digit wage increases despite the widespread strikes, but it did state that it is attempting to negotiate a fair agreement with unions.

The government is working with the unions to resolve a pay dispute, according to a spokesman for the prime minister at a briefing for foreign media at Downing Street. The spokesperson said the government should provide the people with necessary services on strike days in answer to a query from a reporter about whether the administration is determined to push through an anti-strike law despite criticism.

He stated that it is appropriate for the general public to be able to expect a minimum level of service safety on those strike days. The new bill, which the government unveiled at the beginning of this month, intends to guarantee that adequate staffing is maintained in emergency areas throughout labor disputes.

“Pay increases to enhance wages faster than inflation”

He continued, saying that they wanted to stop these issues and did not want to see strikes take place. He claimed that we have made it clear that we cannot accept pay increases that will increase wages faster than inflation or by double digits.

He continued that the government does not want to offer salary increases that “embed inflation for longer.” Teachers’, nurses’, railway drivers’, and ambulance workers’ unions in Britain have already declared further strikes for February and March in response to the salary dispute.
