OUAGADOUGOU: Burkina Faso has asked France to move its forces out of the country within a month, a letter from the authorities to Paris obtained by AFP states.
The letter from the foreign ministry, dated last Wednesday, ends the agreement signed in 2018, allowing French forces to be stationed in the country. It sets a month deadline for the forces’ departure.
AFP obtained the letter from a diplomatic source in Burkina Faso, who was unable to say whether France had acknowledged the letter or not.
The French presidential office is waiting
The French presidential office said that it was waiting for confirmation of the position of Burkina Faso at the highest level.
Earlier Sunday, President Emmanuel Macron was asked about the request of Ouagadougou. He urged there was confusion over the remarks reported in the media and said that the junta leader Ibrahim Traore needed to take a public stance.
