MULTAN: The by-poll process for NA-148 has kicked off under stringent security measures, setting the stage for a closely contested electoral battle.

The main contenders for the seat, PPP candidate Syed Ali Qasim Gilani and Sunni Ittehad Council’s Taimur Malik Altaf Mahay, are expected to engage in a fierce competition.

The vacancy in the national assembly arose when Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani assumed his role in the Senate. In the previous general elections, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani emerged victorious against Malik Taimur Altaf Mahay with a narrow margin. However, the current by-polls anticipate another intense showdown between Ali Qasim Gilani, son of Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, and Malik Taimur Altaf Mahay.

Approximately 444,000 registered voters are eligible to cast their votes in the by-elections. Among the 275 polling stations designated for the process, 69 are identified as sensitive, prompting heightened security measures.

To ensure transparency and security, CCTV cameras have been installed at these sensitive polling stations, aiming to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and safeguard against any potential disruptions.
