Bypass Bridge Collapse in Pakistan’s Capital Claims Two Lives

ISLAMABAD: At least two labourers were killed after an under-construction bypass flyover in the capital’s Bhara Kahu collapsed early Saturday morning, police said.

Rescue teams rushed to the incident location and rescued three labourers from the rubble. A Islamabad Capital Territory Administration spokesperson said two labourers succumbed to injuries. Rescue officials said heavy construction material was being placed when a portion of the bridge caved in.

Islamabad Police Inspector-General Akbar Nasir Khan, Capital Development Authority Chairman Noor-ul- Amin Mangal, assistant commissioner Secretariat Aneel Saeed, and other officials rushed to the incident site to supervise the rescue operation.

Meanwhile, a committee under the supervision of Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon has been constituted to probe the incident.

The 5.6 kilometre-long Bhara Kahu bypass (including a 1-km-long flyover) starts from Murree Road at Malpur and culminates near the Jugi bus stop from where the flyover starts till the end of the local bazaar towards Murree.
