Canada, Australia, New Zealand Call for Sustainable Ceasefire in Gaza

OTTAWA: Canada, Australia and New Zealand on Tuesday supported global efforts for a sustainable ceasefire in war-hit Gaza strip.

The development came soon after the US warned Israel of declining support over its military campaign in besieged enclave.

The three prime ministers in a joint statement expressed alarm at the diminishing safe areas for civilians in Gaza.

They said that price of defeating Hamas cannot be at the continuous suffering of all Palestinians. They also called upon Hamas to free all captives.

US President Joe Biden, earlier on Tuesday said that Israel was losing support over its indiscriminate Gaza bombing. He asked Benjamin Netanyahu to change his hard-liner government, showing a new rift with the Israeli prime minister.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau talking media in Ottawa said he had a very long discussion with Netanyahu about Canada’s position on the Gaza was and commitment toward a two-state solution for the region.

Last month, Trudeau said the killing of women, children and babies must stop in the Palestinian enclave.

According to Gaza’s health ministry since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, 18,412 people have been killed, mostly women and children, amid a deepening humanitarian crisis.

The Israeli raids have almost destroyed entire neighborhoods in northern Gaza. Israeli ground troops have been facing heavy resistance from Hamas fighters in the area.

According to the UN some 1.87 million Palestinians, over 80 percent of Gaza’s population, have left their homes.
