PERTH: Manchester United forward Adriana Leon ignited Canada’s Women’s World Cup campaign on Wednesday with a crucial winner in a 2-1 victory over Ireland, effectively ending Ireland’s hopes of progressing in the tournament.

The pressure was on Olympic champions Canada after being held to a goalless draw against Nigeria, but they displayed resilience in Perth after a challenging start to the match. Arsenal midfielder Katie McCabe stunned Canada in the fourth minute by scoring directly from a corner, delighting the 17,065 fans, mostly cheering for Ireland despite the rain.

However, Canada fought back, equalizing just before half-time with an own goal from Megan Connolly. The deciding goal came in the 53rd minute when Adriana Leon fired a shot past Ireland’s goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan, securing the victory for Canada.

Canada’s Position in World Cup

With this win, Canada moved to the top of Group B with four points, ahead of Australia’s upcoming clash with Nigeria in Brisbane. The result also dashed Ireland’s hopes of progressing in their World Cup debut.
