OTTAWA: Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday he was sure US Secretary of State Antony Blinken would raise the matter of Sikh leader’s assassination with India.

Talking to media persons, he said that Blinken will raise the matter of the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar with his Indian counterpart soon.

He made his statement ten days after Justin Trudeau announced Canada suspected Indian government agents were linked to the assassination of Nijjar in the province of British Columbia in June.

The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will meet with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar today. Responding to a question, Trudeau said: “The US will certainly discuss the matter of killing of Najjar with India.”

Earlier, Justin Trudeau said that they have credible reasons to believe that India’s agents were involved in the assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.  He called on New Delhi to collaborate with Canada to ensure a transparent probe into the murder of Nijjar on Canadian soil.

“We call upon India to take this issue seriously and to work with us to shed complete transparency and ensure justice and accountability in this matter,” PM Trudeau said.

He said “We are a nation of the rule of law. We are going to do the work essential to keep our citizens safe and to uphold our values and the global rules-based order.

Tensions between Canada and India escalated after PM Trudeau’s assertion of a “possible” involvement of India’s agents in the Sikh leader’s killing on June 18 in British Columbia.

The Canadian Prime Minister said that they had “credible” evidence linking India’s agents to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June.

Pakistan called the incident, which has further strained relations between India and Canada, “a reckless act that calls into question New Delhi’s reliability as a credible global partner and its claims for enhanced international responsibilities.”

Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zehra Baloch said that it suggests “that India’s network of extra-territorial killings has now gone international,”.

Earlier, the United States said that they are giving India no “special exemption” over the assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, adding Washington is in contact with New Dehli at a high level over the matter.
