OTTAWA: The Canadian government has announced plans to send more than 800 drones to Ukraine, with deliveries expected to commence as early as this spring.

The Department of National Defense emphasized the critical role that drones play in Ukraine’s conflict with Russia, citing their importance in surveillance, intelligence gathering, and logistics support for moving essential supplies, including munitions. The drones, valued at over $95 million Canadian ($70 million USD), constitute a vital component of Canada’s previously pledged military aid package totaling $500 million Canadian ($370 million USD) for Ukraine.

Drones to Enhance Ukraine’s Defense Capabilities

Manufactured by Teledyne in Waterloo, Ontario, the SkyRanger R70 multi-mission Unmanned Aerial Systems will provide Ukraine with enhanced operational capabilities on the battlefield.

The timing of the announcement, just days before the two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, underscores Canada’s steadfast commitment to standing alongside Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This latest initiative builds upon Canada’s ongoing support for Ukraine’s defense efforts. Canada previously donated 100 high-resolution drone cameras to Ukraine. Over the past two years, Canada has pledged a total of $2.4 billion Canadian ($1.8 billion USD) in military assistance for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.
