MONTREAL, Canada: In a highly unusual Canadian election, 91 candidates competed for a single parliamentary seat in Montreal on Monday. This crowded race has become a political test for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose popularity is waning.
Many of the candidates were running as part of a protest orchestrated by the Longest Ballot Committee, an activist group pushing for electoral reform. The group advocates for a shift from Canada’s current winner-take-all system to a proportional representation model.
Trudeau, in power since 2015, faces increasing criticism for his handling of key issues like the economy, immigration, and housing.

With elections due by October next year, he trails significantly behind Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. A loss in this Liberal stronghold could intensify scrutiny of his leadership, raising concerns about his political future.
This protest and closely watched vote underscore the growing dissatisfaction with Trudeau’s government and the desire for systemic electoral changes in Canada.
