Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Urges Swift Action Against Kidnapping and Street Crime

KARACHI: In a high-level meeting at the CM House on Saturday, Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar directed Inspector General of Police Riffat Mukhtar to implement measures aimed at curbing kidnapping for ransom in the katcha areas and addressing the surge in street crime in Karachi.

The Chief Minister emphasized the need for immediate and effective action, making it clear that the respective police stations would be held accountable for any incidents occurring within their jurisdiction.

Expressing deep concern over the rising incidents of street crime in the city, Justice Baqar underscored the impact on public confidence, noting that citizens do not feel secure in public spaces. He issued a stern warning to police stations, emphasizing their responsibility in maintaining law and order.

Justice Baqar highlighted that despite repeated directives for enhanced police patrolling, the instructions were not fully implemented. In response, IG Police Riffat Mukhtar assured that orders for increased police patrolling had been adhered to. He provided insights into the ongoing efforts to equip police stations and mobile units with advanced communication facilities, emphasizing the ongoing upgradation of police infrastructure.

Turning attention to the resurgence of kidnapping for ransom in the katcha areas of Larkana and Sukkur divisions, the Chief Minister declared zero tolerance for such heinous crimes. He directed the IG Police to ensure the safe recovery of kidnapped individuals and sustain efforts in cracking down on criminal elements in these regions.

A noteworthy proposal emerged during the meeting concerning the tagging of repeat criminals to monitor their movements. The suggestion involved the use of bracelets equipped with chips for individuals involved in multiple offenses. The Chief Minister instructed IG Police Riffat Mukhtar to draft a law outlining this proposal, indicating a commitment to exploring innovative solutions to combat recidivism.

Justice Baqar concluded the meeting by underscoring the importance of ensuring better law and order in the province to facilitate the smooth conduct of general elections. The directives provided during the meeting underscored the Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister’s commitment to addressing critical issues affecting public safety and security.
