ISLAMABAD: The Portuguese Embassy in Islamabad commemorated Portugal National Day with a grand celebration at a local hotel in Islamabad
Ambassador Manuel Frederico Pinheiro da Silva led the event, addressing a distinguished gathering and emphasizing the deep diplomatic ties between Portugal and Pakistan.
In his keynote speech, Ambassador da Silva underscored the importance of sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly in the context of the Ukraine conflict. “Remembering that territorial integrity and sovereignty are the cornerstones of international order is crucial while discussing Ukraine.
It is imperative that Russia ceases its unwarranted aggression against Ukraine, as it sets a grave precedent for the global community,” he declared.
He also encouraged Pakistan to participate at a high level in the forthcoming “Global Peace Summit” scheduled in Switzerland from June 15th.
The Ambassador further addressed Portugal’s position on the Middle East conflict, condemning the Israeli offensive in Rafah and expressing grave concern over the humanitarian crisis. “Portugal strongly condemns the ongoing Israeli offensive in Rafah and is gravely concerned with the continued deterioration of the humanitarian situation,” he remarked.
.He advocated for the recognition of the Palestinian State as a pivotal step, emphasizing Portugal’s support for UNRWA through reinforced financial contributions.
Reflecting on his experiences in Pakistan since his tenure began in February last year, Ambassador da Silva shared his admiration for the country’s natural beauty, historical richness, and cultural diversity. He recounted his travels to various cities including Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Nowshera, Abbottabad, Murree, Taxila, Chilas, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
“The magnificence of the architectural and urban monuments, the richness and diversity of the historical and cultural fabric, and the beauty of nature have become priceless memories,” he remarked.
The Ambassador also expressed his deep appreciation for the warmth and hospitality of the Pakistani people, calling their kindness and hospitality “real treasures.”
Federal Minister for Housing and Works Riaz Peerzada was the chief guest attended by notable figures from political, diplomatic, business, and media circles.
