Chairman WAPDA Promises to Expedite Work on Swat River Diversion Project

ISLAMABAD: Lt. General (Retd) Sajjad Ghani, Chairman Water, and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) on Wednesday urged the project management team to complete the Swat River diversion within the ongoing year, saying it was essential to start construction work on the main dam.

During his visit to the Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project on River Swat upstream of Munda Headworks in District Mohmand, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he directed the WAPDA project team, contractors, and consultants to execute the construction plan within the fixed timeline. The Chairman also visited a number of sites to check construction activities there. He was briefed about the work progress of the ongoing project.

He was informed that construction activities on fourteen key sites are being carried out simultaneously, including the dam, spillway, diversion system, re-regulation pond, switch yard, etc.

Work on the concrete lining in diversion tunnels is progressing at a rapid pace to achieve the target of river diversion. Excavation on right and left abutments of the dam has been completed, while concreting of the foundations of the 2 abutments is in progress.

Excavation work on the spillway is 80 percent complete and concreting is underway on the portions, that have been excavated.

The 213-meter-high dam is a concrete-face-rock-fill reservoir, which is the fifth-highest dam of its kind in the world. It is a multi-purpose project and is scheduled for completion in 2026-27. –APP
