ISLAMABAD: A woman ran her 100th ultramarathon to benefit the charity that helped her husband after he was diagnosed with throat cancer last year.

Apryl Hammett, 50, of Chelmsford, raised nearly £4,000 in her most recent 50-kilometer run in Essex. She stated that she began running after gaining weight after giving birth. Hammett said while raising funds for MacMillan that It’s all about determination.

The race on Sunday at Flitch Way Country Park near Great Dunmow was a success, “a straightforward 50k today,” thanks to the “kind weather.” Hammett has run much longer distances, including the 145-mile (233-kilometer) Grand Union Canal race. However, she refers to the 50-kilometer distance as her “happy run.”

She ran her first marathon in 2002

She stated that she gained a significant amount of weight after the birth of her last child and that something had to be done because her health was deteriorating. She explained that it was either a diet – and she loves her food, so that wasn’t going to happen – or some exercise, so she ran her first marathon in 2002.

She went on to say that, in addition to being physically prepared, you must also be mentally prepared. She stated that it is all about determination to reach the finish line – and she enjoys receiving medals. Her husband, the Guy, whose cancer was successfully treated just before Christmas, called his wife’s 100th ultramarathon “a fantastic feat.” He described her as “extremely good at it,” adding that it was “annoying that she doesn’t train – she just runs.”

According to Luke Ingham, Macmillan’s fundraising coordinator for the East of England, 100 ultra-marathons is an incredible accomplishment. Apryl’s latest challenge has raised funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
