PARIS: Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has made his move to Saudi Arabia, joining Pro League side Al-Ahli, it was announced on Wednesday. The Senegal international’s arrival was confirmed by Al-Ahli through a social media post, which included a video of Mendy signing his contract, with the caption “Welcome Mendy… best goalkeeper in the world.”

Chelsea also released a statement acknowledging Mendy’s departure after spending three seasons with the London club. They highlighted his significant contribution to their Champions League victory in 2021, stating that he will be remembered for his key role in the triumph.

European Players Moving to Saudi Pro League

Mendy’s transfer to Al-Ahli marks the third player from Chelsea to make a move to the Saudi Pro League, which is supported by the country’s sovereign wealth fund. His compatriot Kalidou Koulibaly joined Al-Hilal, while French 2018 World Cup winner N’Golo Kante departed for Al-Ittihad.

This trend of European players being enticed by lucrative salaries began with Cristiano Ronaldo’s move from Manchester United to Al Nassr in January. Ronaldo’s former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema also joined Al-Ittihad, partnering with Kante.

Furthermore, there are reports suggesting that Chelsea’s Moroccan winger Hakim Ziyech is on the verge of a transfer to Al Nassr. Last week, Ruben Neves, the Portuguese international and captain of Wolves, left Chelsea’s Premier League rivals to join Al-Hilal.
