Chelsea Star Sam Kerr Charged with Racial Offence

LONDON: Chelsea and Australian women’s footballer Sam Kerr has been charged with a racially aggravated offence in UK involving a police officer, said London’s Metropolitan Police.

The 30-year-old player, one of the best in the game, was charged over an incident in January 2023 in London, said a police statement.

Police added the dispute took place when a police officer responded to a complaint regarding a taxi fare.

According to the statement Kerr has already appeared in a London court. Police did not give additional details on the incident or what reported during the court proceeding.

Kerr is one of Australian football’s most important players. Last year she graced the cover of the FIFA video game alongside French footballer Kylian Mbappe.

She has been sidelined since January due to a serious knee injury.

Governing body Football Australia said it was aware of the proceedings against Sam Kerr in the Britain.

In a statement it said that as this is an ongoing legal issue, they were unable to provide further comment.

Kerr, born to an Anglo-Indian father and Australian mother, played Australian Rules as a youngster. She started played football at the age of 12.

she made her full international debut against Italy in 2009. After moving to Chelsea in 2020, Kerr rose to a new level.

Kerr during her career has signed lucrative deals with Nike and Mastercard. She has scored 99 goals in 128 games for British club Chelsea.
