CHICAGO, USA: On the second night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, dozens of police officers were stationed outside the skyscraper housing the Israeli consulate in anticipation of a pro-Palestinian demonstration.

The area around the building, which is connected to the Ogilvie Transportation Center, a major commuter hub, saw heightened security with armed officers and metal barricades.

This heightened security follows a series of protests, sparked by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, which have occurred near the consulate since the war began in October.

On Monday night, around 3,500 protesters marched through downtown Chicago, with a small group breaching security fencing near the United Center, leading to clashes with the police. Thirteen people were arrested, primarily for criminal trespass and resisting arrest. Despite some confrontations, the majority of the protests were peaceful, and Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling commended his officers for showing restraint.

In response to the escalating tensions, additional fencing was installed at the park where the breaches occurred, and the police prepared for further demonstrations throughout the week. The demonstrations are primarily organized by the Coalition to March on the DNC, which is advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza. Smaller protests have also been observed across the city, particularly close to Navy Pier, the site of the convention’s welcome celebration.

Earlier in the day, supporters of Israel, including relatives of hostages held by Hamas, gathered near the consulate to call for continued U.S. support for Israel. The pro-Israel group condemned the pro-Palestinian protesters, urging U.S. leaders to unequivocally back Israel.

As the convention continues, the Chicago police remain vigilant, prepared to manage and de-escalate any further protests.
