ISLAMABAD: Chicken meat and egg prices in Lahore and other parts of Punjab have surged significantly following a brief period of decline, posing challenges for consumers already grappling with economic pressures.
As of July 20, the price of chicken meat in the provincial capital has risen by Rs18, reaching Rs595 per kilogramme, up from Rs577 per kg the previous day, according to the latest figures released by local authorities.
The recent drop in chicken prices had been attributed to reduced consumption during Eid-ul-Adha, as many households opted to purchase sacrificial animals such as goats, cows, and camels. However, prices have rebounded sharply in the post-Eid period, reflecting increased demand.
Meanwhile, the cost of eggs has also been adjusted upwards, with the current rate fixed at Rs258 per dozen in Lahore and surrounding areas.
Residents have voiced frustration over the escalating poultry prices, particularly amid a backdrop of rising utility bills and the increasing cost of other essential commodities. Many consumers are urging the government to intervene and address concerns over potential market manipulation by influential groups.
The spike in poultry prices is part of a broader trend of inflation affecting various food items across Pakistan. Cooking oil, ghee, and lentils have also become more expensive recently, following hikes in petrol prices nationwide.
