Chief Justice of Pakistan Expresses Annoyance Over Video, Audio Leaks

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial on Wednesday expressed annoyance over recent video and video leaks related to him.

“It is sad to say that false accusations are leveled against us in video and audio leaks”, the CJP said, asking that “what is the authenticity of these audio and video tapes?”

The CJP warned that the Supreme Court is “showing great patience”. He said that at times, the remarks of the Supreme Court are misunderstood.

Stating that the country’s judiciary is being attacked, the CJP maintained that the “judiciary will be protected”. He added that “we are protecting the country’s constitutional institutions like the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)”.

Earlier, an audio leak purported to be of a telephone talk between PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry and his brother Faisal Chaudhry on Friday added fuel to the current controversy involving the country’s top judges. In the alleged telephonic conversation between Faisal and Fawad, the names of three judges were mentioned.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court also dismissed the appeal against the transfer of CCPO Lahore following it was withdrawn by the petitioner. The CJP Umar Ata Bandial noted that “ as per Article 218, the Election Commission of Pakistan uses the power of transfer to ensure fair election”.

The CJP noted that the Election Commission of Pakistan can issue orders to the caretaker government to transfer officials. He said that the “ECP” is a constitutional institution that “we will protect”, saying that “if there is malpractice in transparent polls, we will intervene”.
