ISLAMABAD: In what appears to be a political move than the administrative one, the federal government on Wednesday replaced Chief Secretary Punjab province Kamran Ali Afzal with Muhammad Abdullah Khan Sumbal hours before the looming show-down in the context of a no-confidence motion against the chief minister.

The position is considered a key in the provincial government’s administrative affairs. The outgoing chief secretary, a grade-22 officer of the Pakistan Administrative Services (PAS), has been directed to report to the Establishment Division. The critical replacement comes at a time when the province is going through a constitutional and administrative crisis amid a no-confidence motion in place against Chief Minister Punjab Pervaiz Elahi.

Muhammad Abdullah Khan Sumbal, a grade-21 officer of the PAS, has previously served as Commissioner Lahore. In another major development, Faisal Shahkar left his charge as IG Punjab Police. He was recently appointed as the United Nations Police Adviser in the Department of Peace Operations (DPO).
