MEXICO CITY: A landslide in central Mexico has killed a three-month-old child and left several people trapped after crashing into homes in the municipality of Jilotzingo, authorities said on Saturday. The disaster struck during heavy rains, the State of Mexico’s civil protection service said.
The landslide occurred when part of a hillside gave way, burying eight houses under tons of debris. The collapse left 12 persons trapped beneath the rubble. Emergency services, aided by rescue dogs, have extricated three survivors, who were transported to a hospital for treatment. The search for additional survivors is ongoing.
In a statement on social media platform X, the civil protection service confirmed the death of the young child and provided updates on the rescue operations. “A landslide swept away eight houses, leaving 12 people under the rubble and, unfortunately, the loss of a three-month-old child,” the statement read.
The area of Jilotzingo, located near Mexico City, has been heavily affected by the recent heavy rains, which have exacerbated the risk of landslides. This region, like much of Mexico, is prone to natural disasters, including earthquakes and hurricanes, which frequently impact the country’s infrastructure and communities.
Landslides are a recurring issue in Mexico, where the combination of heavy rainfall and unstable terrain can lead to devastating effects.
