GENEVA: The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that the more and more children in the Gaza Strip are on the brink of dying due to extreme starvation caused by severe hunger. This was stated by Dr Margaret Harris, a spokesperson for the WHO. Margaret Harris said that newborns in Gaza are dying because of low birth weight.

Harris told media persons in Geneva that what doctors and the heath workers are telling them is more and more they are seeing the effects of hunger; they are seeing newborns simply dying because they are too low birth weight.  She said, “Increasingly, we are seeing kids that are at the point, brink of death that need re-feeding.”

Medical teams in the Gaza Strip have also been admitting high numbers of dangerously underweight pregnant women, the WHO spokesperson said. She further said that the hunger crisis in the Gaza Strip was purely a result of war and “entirely man-made”.

Earlier, UN chief Antonio Guterres said a report backed by the global hunger monitor saying that hunger is now imminent in northern Gaza was an “appalling indictment” of situations on the ground.

The UN Secretary General told the reporters that it is an entirely manmade catastrophe — and the report also makes clear that it can be prevented.  Antonio Guterres called on Israel to ensure access for humanitarian goods across the Gaza Stirp.

Extreme food scarcities in Gaza have already surpassed starvation levels, and mass death is now looming without an immediate truce and surge of food to the region cut off by war, the global hunger monitor said.
