ISLAMABAD: China confirmed on Thursday that it refused an offer of a call with the US defense chief because of the irresponsible decision of Washington to shoot down an alleged spy balloon last week.

China’s defense ministry said that this seriously mistaken and irresponsible approach by the United States did not create a proper atmosphere for talks and exchanges between the two militaries.

It said that the US attacked the airship, seriously violated international practice, and set a bad precedent.

The statement added that China reserves the right to employ necessary means to tackle similar situations.

US shot down balloon last week

Last week, the US shot down a giant balloon after it drifted its jurisdiction, saying it was being used by China for spying purposes.

Beijing admitted that the inflatable balloon had originated in China, but has insisted it was only for civilian use.

The incident led US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to postpone a planned visit to Beijing to reduce tensions as he accused China of violating US sovereignty.
