BEIJING: China on Wednesday expressed sadness over heavy civilian casualties in the ongoing Israeli military operation in Gaza.

“We oppose any action violating international law and urge conflict parties to earnestly implement relevant UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said during her regular briefing.

The spokesperson called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, urging an end to the collective punishment of the people of Gaza by the concerned parties.

According to reports, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to conduct its initial hearing for the South Africa genocide case against Israel on Thursday.

Responding to questions about China’s stance as a UN Security Council member supporting South Africa’s case in the ICJ, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning stated, “We have taken note of the case.”

The death toll in the Palestinian enclave has exceeded 23,300, with around 2 million people displaced, as reported by the Gaza-based health ministry, intensifying the humanitarian crisis.
