BEIJING: Director-General of the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center (CPJRC) Cui Peng has said that researchers from the two countries will jointly study and assess the impact of geological disasters and climate change on China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and local sustainable development.
A scientific and technological innovation platform between Pakistan and China, the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences, was inaugurated at Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad.
On the occasion, the director general said that CPEC areas are vulnerable to frequent natural hazards. Its ecosystem and environment are fragile, and socio-economic development is affected by several constraints, affecting local resilience and sustainable development.
He said that addressing these challenges through research and supporting the sustainable development of CPEC is a shared goal of scientists from both nations.
Opportunities for Students in China
Assistant professor at the Earth Sciences Department, Quaid-i-Azam University Shahid Iqbal said that it is also a very good opportunity for academia in Pakistan and students to have access to modern research in the field of earth sciences in China.
The inauguration ceremony attracted a large number of scholars, students, and officials from both sides.
Aiming at promoting sci-tech cooperation against climate-induced disasters and talent training, the center will act as a national platform between Pakistan and China, with research fields covering environment, ecology, construction, disaster reduction, and sustainable development.
