Beijing: China on Thursday refuted allegations made by Taiwan’s leadership regarding Beijing’s interference in the upcoming presidential election on the self-ruled island.

Speaking at a press conference, Chinese defense ministry spokesperson Wu Qian accused Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of exaggerating claims of mainland China’s involvement in its elections.

Wu Qian said that the DPP authorities were actively “hype[ing] up” the narrative of Chinese interference, accusing Taipei of attempting to “stoke confrontation and manipulate the election.”

As the January 13 vote in Taiwan approaches, one of the key focal points is how the presidential candidates will handle and manage relations with China.
